Jerry Osteryoung is the Jim Moran Professor of Entrepreneurship (Emeritus), and Professor of Finance (Emeritus) in the College of Business at Florida State University. He was the founding executive director of the Jim Moran Institute, serving in that position from 1995 through 2008, and taught at FSU for over 34 years.
Osteryoung received an undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech, an MBA from the University of South Florida, and his doctorate from Georgia State University. He consults with entrepreneurs throughout the State of Florida. Over the last fifteen years he has directly assisted over 3000 entrepreneurs.
He has written eight books, including in 2003, So You Need to Write a Business Plan (which is available on Amazon.com), and Jerry’s Recipes for Success-an Entrepreneurial Cookbook (published in 2004). His newest book with Tim O’Brien is entitled If you have employees, then you really need this book!
Osteryoung has written over 60 academic articles on entrepreneurial and finance subjects. Since March 2001, he has written articles on entrepreneurship for a weekly column in the Tallahassee Democrat, which get syndicated in at least six other newspapers. Additionally, he is a monthly columnist for Inc. magazine.
Osteryoung is the past president of Sunrise Rotary and is a six-time Paul Harris Fellow. Additionally, he is a member of both the Bequeath Society and the Paul Harris Society.
He is the past president of the Board of 211 Big Bend (local and state crisis hot lines) and served as a crisis counselor at 211 Big Bend, contributing over 900 volunteer hours.
He is chairman of the board of Florida Commerce Credit Union and chairman of the board of Goodwill Industries of the Big Bend. He is currently the treasurer on the board of Fringe Benefits Management Company. Additionally, he serves or had served on many other boards including the American Red Cross (past chairman of the board), Girl Scouts Counsel, and Leadership Tallahassee. He is a graduate of Class XX of Leadership Tallahassee and Class XXV of Leadership Florida.
Osteryoung is a frequent speaker at international, national, and local events. He gives about 100 speeches a year on business related topics.
Jerry is currently training his two black labs (Sophie and Bella) for obedience trials. Sophie has won a second AKC title (CDX) and is working on her third. Bella thinks Sophie gets way too much attention, but has just earned her first AKC obedience title.
