Welcome to summer session

Start off at a good pace for a successful summer by following this handy checklist:

  • Drop or add courses before midnight Thursday. On-campus students needing help should see Jennifer Boyles, assistant director of graduate programs, in 233 Rovetta Business Building. Online students needing help should contact online registrars Kim Burkes (MBA) and Freddi Robinson (MSM-RMI and MS-MIS).
  • Pay your tuition and fees by Friday, May 20.

Incoming MBA students learn the ropes

Incoming MBA students took to the challenge course at the FSU Rez on Friday, where they spent the day working in teams to conquer challenges ranging from giant spider webs, tightrope walks, trust falls and blindfolded mazes.

Graduating this August?

In order to receive your diploma, you must “apply for graduation,” by May 27 using the link on the university's graduation Web site. Commencement will take place at 9 a.m. Aug. 6.

Stay tuned for information about the College of Business Master’s Hooding Ceremony on Aug. 5. Those traveling to Tallahassee will want to make hotel reservations early. Here’s a handy link.

Study abroad this summer

This summer’s Global Business Seminar will journey to Sydney, Australia, on Aug. 6-14. The seminar's theme is "Green Practices and Business Performance in Australia," and students will undertake a service-learning project with an emphasis on corporate social responsibility. All on-campus and online master’s students are eligible to participate and must register for the course. For deadlines and fees, visit the course website. For more information, contact Dr. Daekwan Kim, Global Business Seminar instructor. Master’s students needing help registering for the course should contact their registrar: Jennifer Boyles (on-campus); Freddi Robinson (online MSM-RMI and MS-MIS) and Kim Burkes (online MBA).

Hooding Ceremony 2011

Class of 2011: College of Business master’s candidates prepare to participate in the spring 2011 Master's Hooding Ceremony on April 29 at FSU’s Opperman Music Hall. Erin Ennis, MBA 1990 and vice president of finance and administration at Residential Elevators Inc., was this year's keynote speaker. Kelsey Syvrud, far right, spoke on behalf of the Master of Science in Finance graduates.

About 50 of the nearly 100 spring master's business graduates participated in the April 29 ceremony. Graduating students represented six College of Business master’s programs: Master of Accounting, Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Management Information Systems, Master of Science in Management with a major in Risk Management and Insurance and Master of Science in Marketing. A video of the ceremony may be viewed on the college’s website. 

Make yourself official

Be sure to enroll yourself in the COB Graduate Student Organization to get graduate student announcements and other must-see information. Follow these steps:

  • Log in to Blackboard.
  • Click on the Organizations tab at the top.
  • Search for “COB Graduate Student Organization” in Organization Search on the left.
  • Hit enroll button on the right-hand side of the screen. 

Access building, rent a locker

Master’s students still needing to access the College of Business after hours or rent a locker should see graduate staff member Dee Aribo before 1 p.m. each weekday in the Graduate Programs office, 233 Rovetta Business Building. Be sure to bring your FSU card. Lockers are located in the Master’s Lounge, 225 RBB, and can be rented up to three semesters at a time. Cost is $10 per semester. Bring exact change or a check made payable to the MBA Association.

Kudos, colleagues

Dr. Ceasar Douglas, who teaches Organizational Behavior to online MBAs and has taught the capstone Strategy and Business Policy course for Accelerated MBAs, has agreed to serve as the chair of the Department of Management beginning Aug. 1.

Julian Dozier (MAcc 2006) is an audit manager at Thomas Howell Ferguson PA in Tallahassee.  During the five years since he earned his master’s degree, he has obtained his license as a Certified Public Accountant, become Certified in Financial Forensics and become a Certified Fraud Examiner. 

Brad Jones (MBA 2007) is director of partnership services for the Atlanta Braves, where he is currently starting his 7th season.

Nik Patel (MBA 2009) is a financial performance improvement consultant at Ernst & Young in Atlanta.

John Berberich (MBA 2011), Casey Terrell (MBA 2011), and Matias Ferradas (MBA 2011), have all accepted positions with Burger King Corporation in Miami as corporate manager trainees.

Faisal Al Busairi (MBA 2011) has accepted a position as a junior professional officer with the World Bank.

Sarah Burns (MBA 2011), Stephanie Hampshire (MBA 2011) and Eric Horwitz (MBA 2011) have all accepted positions with Lockheed Martin Corp. in Washington, D.C., as financial analysts.

Megan Johnson (MBA 2011) has accepted a position as a marketing associate with the PGA Tour in Melbourne.

Matthew Kipp (MBA 2011) has accepted a position as a financial analyst with Harris Corp. in Melbourne, FL.

Lee Connon (MSF 2011) has accepted a position as a securities analyst trainee /registered investment advisor with Marketaction, Inc. in Chicago.

Andrew Schellenberg (MSF 2011) has accepted a position with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Jacksonville as a risk assurance associate.

Alixandre Deaux (MSF 2011) has accepted a position in the financial management trainee program with CSX Corp. in Jacksonville.
