All for a good cause: From left, MBA Association members Adrian Young, Community Service Chairperson Jamey Ballo and Secretary Kevin Moore participated in the Down Syndrome Association of Tallahassee’s Buddy Walk on Oct. 8. The event included a one-mile advocacy walk in support of the acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. Several MBAA members took part in the walk at SouthWood’s Town Center while others manned a carnival-game booth, where children played for prizes.

TMH CEO O’Bryant to speak at Ethics Roundtable

Mark O'Bryant, CEO of Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare and a national leader in the health care industry, will discuss the intersection of ethics and health care at 11 a.m. Tuesday,Oct. 25, in Starry Conference Room, 214 Rovetta Business Building. The talk is part of the MBA Ethics Roundtable, a series of speakers and events designed to explore and clarify the relationship between ethics and business decisions for students, faculty, and staff in an effort to improve the quality of business education and business decision-making.

The Jim Moran Institute wants to hear your big ideas

The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship is urging entrepreneurial-minded students to compete in the 2011 InNOLEvation Challenge business-plan competition. The Jim Moran Institute and a host of corporate sponsors have joined forces to sponsor the high-stakes competition, contributing more than $250,000 in cash and in-kind services, to be awarded to the creators of the top 10 student business plans. “This is an opportunity for students to learn how to develop the best approaches to selling those ideas to venture capitalists and other potential backers,” said Dr. Tim R.Holcomb, The Jim Moran Institute’s executive director and the university’s Jim Moran Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship. “This also is a way to cultivate creative new businesses that could potentially create new jobs in our community.” An Idea Workshop will be held at 7:00-9:00 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25,in 108 Rovetta Business Building. Attention, graduates

Cap and gown ordering for fall 2011 commencement continues through Oct. 28 at the Florida State Bookstore.

The College of Business Master’s Hooding Ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m., Friday,Dec. 16. The hooding ceremony will be followed by a short reception for graduates, family and friends. Graduates may RSVP until Nov. 18.

Universitywide fall commencement will be held at 9 a.m., Dec. 17, at the Leon County Civic Center, 505 W. Pensacola St. Both ceremonies require graduates to wear the cap and gown regalia.

Go global for spring break

This spring’s Global Business Seminar is headed to Europe. Participants will make corporate and cultural visits in Strasbourg, France, and nearby Frankfurt,Germany. Students must register for the three-hour course (MAR 5935) along with the rest of their classes before Dec. 3. In addition to tuition, the program will cost about $1,450 plus airfare and insurance. Romeu

Wendy Romeu, MS-MIS student, is currently profiled in an employee feature on Finmeccanica North America’s website. Romeau works as a tactical systems program manager for DRS Technologies in Melbourne, Fla., a subsidiary of global aerospace, defense and transportation holding company Finmeccanica.

Amberly Zauche, MSM-RMI student, recently accepted a position at the Apalachee Center in Tallahassee as a performance improvement specialist in the Risk Management/Quality Improvement Department.

Michael Wheeler, Online MBA student; Andrew Marshall, Online MBA student; John Messina, MSF 2011;and Jess McClellan, MBA 2011, were awarded the Kislak Award for Outstanding Classroom Performance. Given to a single student in each of several real-estate courses, the award, made possible by a grant from Kislak Family Fund Inc., recognizes exceptional student performance in the classroom.

Nicholas Del Zingaro, MSF 2011; Albert El Beyrouty, MSF 2011; Christopher Reber, MSF2011; and Brad Wolfe, MSF 2011, have completed ARGUS training coursesin real estate valuation.

Dr. Greg Gerard, MAcc program director and associate professor of accounting, co-wrote, “Internal Audit Sourcing Arrangements and Reliance by External Auditors,” recently published in  Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory.

‘Trends in Business’ seminar held for business leaders

The MBA Early Career Board hosted the second Trends in Business Management seminar Sept. 21 at the FSU Alumni Center. Providing professional development for business leaders, this year’s speakers and topics included Dr. Doug Stevens, MBA program director and associate professor of accounting, “Does morality matter in business and economics?”; Ryan Dietz (MBA 2009), associate at STRUCTURE Commercial Real Estate inTallahassee, “Making lemonade in a market full of lemons”; Dr. William Christiansen, Finance Department Chair and Bank of America Professor of Finance, “Analyzing the current business environment”; and Jean Bates (MBA 2008), founder and co-owner of Lucy and Leo’s Cupcakery in Tallahassee, “Building your business’ community presence.”
