FSU College of Business welcomes Thomas J. Linsmeier

The students in the FSU College of Business Accounting Department can count on a lot of things – one of the most important is the quality of their education.

This week, the Florida State University College of Business welcomes Dr. Thomas J. Linsmeier as the Thomas Howell Ferguson presents the John Perry Thomas Accounting Speaker Series guest speaker.

Linsmeier was appointed as a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) in July of 2006 and is an award-winning teacher and researcher with particular expertise in financial reporting for derivatives and risk-management activities.

Linsmeier, who was formerly the Russell E. Palmer Endowed Professor and chairman of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems at Michigan State University, has served as Academic Fellow and Special Consultant to the Office of the Chief Accountant at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). While at the SEC, Linsmeier was responsible for developing U.S. financial reporting disclosure rules relating to the market risk inherent in derivatives and other financial instruments.

Throughout his academic career, Linsmeier’s research has explored the role of accounting information in securities markets, including the usefulness to investors of fair value and market risk management disclosures, the valuation-relevance of earnings component information, and the economic effects of changes in accounting regulation.

Linsmeier’s work has been published in several scholarly publications, including The Accounting Review and the Journal of Accounting Research, and he has served as chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Committee and president of the Financial Accounting and Reporting section of the American Accounting Association.

Industry experts like Thomas Linsmeier play a key role in the unique education offered at the FSU College of Business. The combination of world-renowned professors, experts from all fields of business and an individualized approach create an education that provides an unparalleled understanding of the global business world.
