Profiles of Accounting Majors

My older brother loved Florida State University his whole life and it was the only school he applied to, which is a bit strange since my family lives in New Jersey. I never thought I wanted to go to Florida State, but I visited my brother a few times and loved the campus and the atmosphere of Tallahassee. When choosing a major, my mother suggested two options, engineering or Accounting. I had always loved math and had a real knack for it. I chose Accounting, not really knowing too much about it and believing the falsehood that Accounting is primarily doing taxes. When I took my first course in the area, Introduction to Financial Accounting, I really enjoyed it and realized there is so much more to Accounting than learning how to file a tax return.

As I entered The College of Business, I loved everything about it. I loved the building and its location on campus. I loved that everyone sat outside in between classes. As I started taking my first Accounting courses and core business classes, I realized how much I enjoyed the business world. Everything you learn in the classroom is applicable to your life. I have learned about the stock market, IRAs, real estate contracts, loans, and tax. In addition to preparing me for a job, my education at Florida State has prepared me for many financial aspects of life.

I have also been very fortunate to get involved within the College of Business. I served as Treasurer during the 2006-2007 academic year for Beta Alpha Psi (the Accounting, Finance, and MIS honors organization) and as President during the 2007-2008 year. I am also the Accounting chair of the Student Leadership Council within The College of Business. Getting involved, especially in leadership roles, has opened up so many doors for me. You get a chance to really learn proper business etiquette, how to properly draft a resume, and receive advice and practice for interviews.

I also have met many amazing students, and established great relations with many of my professors. The professors at Florida State make such an effort to talk to their students and help them in any way possible. They can answer so many questions because they have already been through everything. They can tell you the positives and negatives of working for a large firm or a private one. They can also give guidance on which field a student might be more interested in, whether it is tax or audit. Even more so, they just put school and work into a perspective so that it is not too overwhelming. I also have had the privilege to meet some of the most prominent alumni from The College of Business and establish great professional relationships. The alumni have wisdom to share and many are willing to give an FSU student a chance, with an internship or a job offer.

I cannot be more happy with my decision to attend Florida State University, and then to have become an Accounting major. I love it so much that I am continuing my education at FSU by getting my Masters in Accounting, with a concentration in Taxation. Florida State has so much to offer its students. We have amazing sports and fantastic facilities, great professors and selection of classes, and an incredible student body. I am grateful for everything that Florida State University has provided me, and will always be proud to be a Seminole.
