Profiles of Accounting Majors

When I was in high school, I first thought about becoming a part of my dad's business. I also thought about studying engineering because I loved math. Since I was interested in business, I took my first accounting class and found that I really liked it. I enjoyed it because it is a rule and number based subject, similar to a math class. My uncle is an accountant, and he pointed out to me that you can't go wrong learning accounting. Making management decisions and watching the numbers in a business are dependent upon accounting concepts. Also, he pointed out if you don't choose to actually become a businessman, like I was planning on in my father's business, there is always a need for accountants.

I attended another university as an undergraduate before coming to Florida State University to complete my bachelor's degree. At the other university I felt as if the professors were talking down to the students, rather than sharing knowledge with them. I decided to look for another place to attend college, and I compared two other universities to see which one would be a good fit for me. At one university I considered attending, the people I saw were not helpful, nor were they particularly friendly.

In contrast, when I came to FSU for an on-site visit, everyone was very eager to make me feel welcome and to show me the campus. I felt at ease here at Florida State, and I have found, as a student, that professors are always available. They make students a part of the learning process rather than being aloof and stand-offish. Also, in the accounting program at FSU we become well-rounded in many business subjects. I've taken classes covering law topics such as the Uniform Commercial Code and marketing subjects such as branding. Accounting truly touches on every corner of business, and accounting students will be able to bring these strengths to any business they choose to be a part of.

I have become particularly interested in tax, and have chosen that concentration of study in my Masters program. After I finish my Masters degree in accounting, I am planning to go on to law school and I look forward to becoming a tax attorney.
