Archie B. Carroll




Archie Carroll is Robert W. Scherer Professor of Management Emeritus in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia and currently Director of the Nonprofit Management & Community Service Program.

Archie Carroll has served on the faculty of the Terry College of Business, University of Georgia since 1972. In 1986 he was awarded the Robert W. Scherer Chair of Management. From 1995-2000 he served as Department Head of the Department of Management. He has been Director of the Nonprofit Program since 2000. Dr. Carroll received his three academic degrees in business and management from the College of Business, The Florida State University (Tallahassee).

In 1992, Dr. Carroll was awarded the Sumner Marcus Award for Distinguished Service by the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management. In 1993, he was awarded the Terry College of Business, University of Georgia, Distinguished Research Award for twenty years of research in corporate social performance, business ethics and stakeholder management. In 1996, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Southern Management Association. He served as President of the Society for Business Ethics during 1998-1999. In 2003, he received the Terry College of Business Distinguished Faculty Service Award. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Management in 2005.

Dr. Carroll has published 18 books in various editions and over 100 articles in journals and books. His latest book is Business & Society: Ethics and Stakeholder Management, 7th Edition (2009), one of the leading books in this field, with Ann K. Buchholtz. His research articles have appeared in such publications as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, California Management Review, Sloan Management Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Business and Society, Business Ethics Quarterly, Business Horizons, Business & Professional Ethics Journal, Journal of Business Ethics, and many others. He writes monthly columns on business ethics and moral leadership for the business section of the Athens Daily News/Banner Herald newspaper. His teaching, research and consulting interests have been in business ethics, stakeholder management, and corporate social performance. He is currently on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Public Affairs, and he recently completed terms on the Editorial Review Boards of Journal of Management, Business Ethics Quarterly and Business and Society. He is on the Editors Advisory Board of Annual Editions: Business Ethics 07/08.

Professor Carroll has taught in Management Training programs or consulted with such organizations as Synovus Financial Corporation, The Chamber of Commerce of the U.S., BellSouth, Westinghouse, IBM, Credit Union National Association, Georgia Bankers Association, Walker Information, Park & Recreation Professionals, AssoEtica (Milan), the Southeastern Electric Exchange, Ethics Officers Association, and others. Over the years, he has presented lectures in Nice, France; Helsinki and Jyvaskyla, Finland: Nurnberg, Germany; Cambridge, England; Johannesburg, South Africa; Leuven, Belgium, Caracas, Venezuela, Santiago, Chile, and Milan and Verona, Italy (GLOBIS Study Abroad 2001 - 2007).

Dr. Carroll has served in many professional level capacities. In the Social Issues in Management (SIM) Division of the Academy of Management, he has been chairman of the division (1976-77), program chair, member of the governance committee, chairman of the doctoral consortium, chairman of the book award committee, and has been a presenter many times for the SIM Doctoral Consortium and New Faculty Workshop. He was a founding Board member of the International Association for Business and Society (IABS) and has served as secretary of the Southern Management Association (SMA). He has twice served on the SMA Board of Directors.
