Mentoring is a "Golden Opportunity" to make a difference!

No student's education is complete without a solid grounding in how business works beyond the classroom. Mentor Programs provide an essential link between academic theory and business reality, and offer personal and professional benefits to every participant. The College of Business Student Leadership Council developed and currently manages the Golden Opportunities Mentorship Program for the Florida State University College of Business.

How does Mentoring work?

  • Students fill out an application, submit a resume and letter of recommendation from a faculty member, and complete a personal interview in order to be eligible to participate.
  • Students accepted to the mentorship program are matched with a mentor with expertise in their area of interest. In many cases, it is possible to match students with mentors who live in the city in which the student eventually wants to work.
  • Prior to beginning the mentorship period, the student is trained on program goals and expectations.
  • Mentorships last for approximately twelve (12) weeks during the semester. Mentors and students should communicate either by phone, email or in person (if geography permits) at least 30 minutes per week.
  • Both the student and the mentor evaluate the experience and provide feedback during and at the end of their assigned period.

Mentors stand to become more educated on issues in higher education by learning about the challenges facing college students today. Mentors can provide their students with insights from their own experience and advice on best practices in applying the skills they are mastering in college, as well as valuable assistance and advice for their career path.

Goals for Mentors include but are not limited to:

  • Answering questions and giving advice
  • Discussing values and ethics in business
  • Helping with corporate terminology
  • Suggesting articles and books
  • Critiquing of cover letter and resume
  • Conducting mock interviews
  • Hosting office visits
