Career Fair 2007

On January 31st Florida State University's Dedman School of Hospitality hosted its 20th annual Career Fair. In attendance were sixty companies varying from major chain and luxury hotels to restaurants, convention centers, real estate companies, major food distributors, and golf clubs. This event was a huge success overall, attracting students majoring in Hospitality Management, Finance, Marketing, Management, MIS, Risk Management/Insurance, Real Estate & Business Law, and even Recreation & Leisure Services Administration. Nicole Raper, a recent alumnus of the Dedman School of Hospitality, feels, "It's a great opportunity no matter where you are in your college career. Whether you're looking for an internship or a direct hire position, there's something here for everyone."

The Dedman School of Hospitality prides itself on its 100% placement rate, and the annual Career Fair is just one part of the program that guarantees this phenomenal rate. According to Rick Konsavage, Regional Director of Operations for Ocean Properties Ltd. and a repeat Career Fair attendee, he has recruited "over fifteen students in the past few years." and some have already been promoted to general managers. He also likes "the enthusiasm" and "how in tuned the students are with working and going to school. They are very involved."

Many people were pleased with the way this event turned out. "We had an outstanding turnout of high quality companies and excellent students that have made it the most successful turnout we've had in twenty years," remarks Dr. Robert Brymer, Director of the Dedman School of Hospitality. This was also a wonderful opportunity for students to "get questions answered and get a better feel for what's out there and overall make some great connections," says Jessica Sauls, a student. Recruiters such as Viviana Santisteban from the Mandarin Oriental Miami were also pleased with the student turnout, "We came because of the school's reputation. We met some of the students in the past and we were very impressed, so we decided to come for the first time and it's great."

Special thanks go to Platinum Sponsors, Armark and Ocean Properties, Ltd., and Garnet Sponsors, St. Joe, Gaylord Palms, and WaterColor. Career Fair 2007 would not have been possible without the leadership of Dr. Brymer and Kim Lemont, a senior and Career Fair coordinator. "Kim Lemont did a phenomenal job, as a student, handling this. We need to thank Dr. Brymer. He's turned this around. This is one of the traditions of the Dedman School of Hospitality that has set an example for other hospitality schools," boasts Professor Jim Riscigno.
