Kathleen McCullough

Kathleen McCullough knows experience is a great teacher.

She knows this because her earliest learning of risk management and insurance came through dinner conversations with her father, an insurance agent. She also knows this because she sees the industry knowledge exchanged among working professionals in the online classes she teaches.

As the State Farm Professor of Risk Management and Insurance, McCullough directs the College of Business’ fully online master’s degree for insurance students. The graduate program draws a student pool diverse in age and experience level from across the nation.

“Where else but online could you put them in one classroom?” McCullough said.

In addition to teaching, McCullough spends time researching topics such as the no-fault insurance debate, stranger-oriented life insurance, privacy breaches and exposure to toxic mold and silica – all issues that directly affect insurance plans and regulations.

“If we can do something to make people more aware of the products they need and regulations required to make sure those products are offered in an effective and efficient manner, that’s useful,” McCullough said. “I don’t think we set out to change the world, but we do end up reducing uncertainty.”
