Youth Initiative - Junior Achievement (JA)

The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship sponsors a youth initiative called Junior Achievement (JA) to promote an understanding of entrepreneurship and business to high school students.

Although young people are our future leaders and business executives, many of them lack the necessary skills to be successful at their jobs, to rise to the top of their chosen professions, or to run their own businesses. A recent survey by the Florida Council on Economic Education and the Florida Chamber found that Florida’s workforce could be improved by increasing students’ understanding of economics and financial issues. The Junior Achievement program provides students with the opportunity to learn about the free enterprise system and to explore the many opportunities that our economic system has to offer.

Junior Achievement is currently in 12 schools in Leon County: Ability 1st, Chiles, FAMU Developmental Research, Florida High, Godby, John Paul II Catholic, Leon, Lincoln, Maclay, North Florida Christian, Pace Center for Girls, and Rickards. Future plans project Junior Achievement expanding in Leon County. JA is an exciting program that gets students interested and participating in activities to help them understand entrepreneurship and the role of business in their lives.

This year Junior Achievement is focused on 4 programs: Personal, Finance programs that expose students to critical decision-making in reaching their personal financial goals; JA Titan, a computer based business simulations; Success skills which is designed to enhance interpersonal and communication skills in the workplace; and JA Company that focuses on analyzing and exploring the various business roles within a student directed company. A total of 54 JA classes have been scheduled for the 07/08 school year.

These JA programs are conducted once a week for a 10-week period and are correlated with the Sunshine State Standards. A network of dedicated business volunteers and teachers has contributed to making Junior Achievement a premier business education program in Leon County.
