HR Center Meeting Summary
October 2nd and 3rd 2008
Florida State University
Cruise on the Gallant Lady: Thursday, October 2nd

The evening cruise on the Gallant Lady, graciously sponsored by JM Family Enterprises (thank you Carmen Johnson), was simply amazing. If you were not able to go on the cruise, it is impossible to tell you about the beauty of the Gallant Lady. The staff members were perfect hosts and the weather was outstanding. It was an absolutely perfect evening.
HR Center Meeting: Friday, October 3rd
Meeting hosted by Tom Shea and held at Right Management
Tom provided a great breakfast and lunch for all participants. A special thanks to Stephanie Hanna (Tom’s assistant) for pulling everything together for us! Hosting our meetings is a lot of work, but Tom and Stephanie made it seem effortless.
Attendees: Tom Shea, Doug Barclay, Stanley Bloom, Kathleen Slattery, George Boué, Stephen Cerrone, David Faulkenberry, John-Paul Morgante, Linda Bond, John Wolf, Kevin Kelleher (for Jim Acton), Pat Chaffin, Mark Krauss, Charles Johnson, Carmen Johnson, Dionne Wong Jones, Stephen Garfinkel (speaker), Jerry Ferris, and Pam Perrewé.
Speaker on Immigration Law
Steven H. Garfinkel is a nationally recognized immigration law expert with over twenty-three years of business immigration law experience. Steven presented a fascinating account of the news issues surrounding immigration law. Thank you!
Updates on the FSU Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Disabled Veterans
Pamela Perrewé updated us on the first class of our new Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Disabled Veterans (EBDV). The first class went through the FSU program this summer and it was a huge success thanks to Randy Blass. We had 15 disabled vets in the program and 7 of them have already started their own businesses. We have four universities participating (i.e., Syracuse University, Texas A&M, UCLA, and Florida State University). This past week, the consortium of schools added Purdue University to the mix. At Florida State University, the cost to fund a veteran is about $5,000.00 per vet (all teaching and tutoring is volunteered), and we are looking for ways to fund this important program. Pam thanked the HR Center members for helping to financially jumpstart this program last year.
Worst Practices Discussion from our HR Center Members
Pat Chaffin, Stephen Cerrone, and John-Paul Morgante shared some very interesting and real stories about some “worst” practices they have experienced. The session was not only very interesting, but very entertaining. Thanks to Pat, Stephen, and John-Paul for their willingness to allow us to have a glimpse into their work lives.
Business Meeting with Corporate Partners and Faculty.
Tom and Pam discussed a variety of topics including meeting venues, HR internships, and (perhaps most importantly) new HR Center shirts! George Boué volunteered to work on a new logo for us. FSU has a new internship director, Lauren Dalton; Lauren will be able to streamline any requests for FSU HR interns. Feel free to contact Pam or Lauren if you would like to support an intern. Lauren can be reached at: ldalton@cob.fsu.edu
