Florida State University Society for Human Resource Management Student Chapter #5259
Florida State's Student Chapter of SHRM is focused on building a stronger HR professional. With that goal in mind, our chapter serves to give students a glimpse beyond classroom experience and into the real world of work and HR.
To accomplish this, FSU's student chapter is closely aligned with the College of Business' Center for Human Resource Management and the Big Bend SHRM. We feel that by fostering relationships between students and professionals, we provide students with realistic insights into the world of the HR professional and facilitate the transition from HR student to HR professional.
In our effort to produce stronger HR professionals, FSU's Student chapter seeks to provide the following opportunities to its student members:
- Information on Career Options. Many students join an SHRM chapter to explore possible career paths in human resource management. To address this, we bring in speakers from different areas of HR and invite them to explain the pros and cons of their specific HR role, we host panel discussions with HR professionals focusing on current HR challenges and opportunities, we encourage members to attend the local SHRM chapter meetings, and we encourage student involvement with FSU's Center for Human Resource Management.
- Career Preparation. In an effort to prepare students for the transition into professional life, we invite knowledgeable speakers to comment on current events and "hot" issues in the HR field. We are establishing a mentor program and actively promote professional certification. We actively support PHR exam preparation by integrating practice questions into our Chapter meetings.
- Assistance Finding Jobs. In addition to career preparation, we seek to assist the placement of members into professional HR positions by creating opportunities for interaction with Center members and local SHRM professional members. We emphasize importance networking skills and making professional contacts by encouraging attendance at Center meetings, sponsoring chapter meetings, seminars, and conferences.
- Social Interaction. Finally, we seek to establish a sense of community among students interested in HR. We see chapter membership and involvement with the Center and the Big Bend SHRM chapter as opportunity to build networks among current and future HR professionals.
