Thursday – May 15th
Wine Tasting! This event was sponsored graciously by Mark Krauss and Southern Wine and Spirits. The wine was wonderful and the information about the wines was invaluable! Everyone had a great time. Thanks Mark!!
Friday – May 16th Topics Covered:
- Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Disabled Veterans (EBDV). Dr. Randy Blass from the College of Business updated us on the new program that he is directing at FSU. EBDV is designed to help vets returning from current conflict's launch their own business ventures and as a result become independent and active members of their communities. Randy thanked those HR Center members who donated to the program – we would not have this program at FSU if it were not for the generosity of our members!
- Students' Attitudes on Employee Benefits. Brandon Tucker (one of our HR undergraduate students) discussed the findings from a study he conducted examining what students are looking for in terms of employee benefits; most would love to have the option of having their college loans paid off.
- An Empirical Examination of the HR Practices – Firm Performance Relationship. Chad Van Iddekinge (faculty member from the College of Business) discussed a longitudinal study with a fast-food franchise that examined the effects of employee training and selection on bottom-line firm performance.
- Current employment law: The impact on strategic decision making in organizations. Beverly Hinton (EEOC Deputy Director, Birmingham, AL) discussed the top 10 tips for dealing with the EEOC.
- HR doctoral students present their dissertation proposal summaries. There were three brief presentations from doctoral students who will be collecting their dissertation data in 2008-2009 and who are looking for an organization that might be interested in their study.
- Business Meeting with Corporate Partners and Faculty. We discussed HR internships for FSU students, venues for future meetings, and our continued vision for the HR Center. Specific issues:
- HR Internships; students can earn 0-3 credit hours working as an intern in an organization. Paying students for their work is fine but not required (this can be examined on a case by case basis). Pamela Perrewé will be asking HR Center members if they are interested in having an intern work in their organization. She will work with Randy Blass to develop a list of organizations and a list of students interested in internships.
- Suggested topics for our fall meeting included globalization and immigration law issues as well as HR legislation.
- We discussed the concern that, due to severe budge cuts, FSU might eliminate the HR major. The Dean of the College of Business and the Management Department Chairman are both committed to the HR major and it is very likely that the HR major will continue as it has.
- Our fall meeting will be in South Florida. More information to follow shortly.
- FSU versus NC State baseball game. We were in one of the sky boxes and watched the Noles beat NC State 1-0.
