The Master Plan for May 19, 2008

Step up to lead

Today is the deadline for those wishing to run for an MBA Association officer post. Candidates for president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, historian or part-time liaison should send their one-page platforms to Joanna Southerland, MBAA adviser, before the end of the day. They will be posted in the COB Graduate Student Organization in Blackboard for all MBA students to read.

Full-time MBAs must be present to vote at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Starry Conference Room, 214 Rovetta Business Building. Part-time and online students may vote by e-mailing Scott Newbern, MBAA historian, before Wednesday at noon.

Plan on an internship

Full-time MBAs who just received their bachelor’s degrees must make an appointment with Joanna Southerland, director of graduate programs support, to assess how they will carry out their internship requirements before graduation. It’s not too late to secure work experience this summer. Repeatedly, recruiters say MBAs without significant work experience will likely start out making the same salary as those with only bachelor’s degrees.

Ante up by Friday

All tuition and fees for your summer coursework are due by 4 p.m. Friday. For other key deadlines and dates, check out the University Registrar’s calendar.

Mark your calendar

This summer's "Get a Job" series continues at 12:30 p.m. next Wednesday, May 28, when sales expert Pat Pallentino talks of "ROI=You: How to sell yourself." Last week Randy Pople, president of Capital City Trust Company, pictured, offered helpful advice to MBAs getting ready for corporate America. His suggestions included mastering the art of accurate letter writing and practicing proper cell-phone etiquette.

Make your resume easily identifiable

Career tip: When sending someone a resume, be sure to include your name in the document’s file name. Not doing so guarantees your resume will be easily overlooked and difficult to find in someone’s inbox. Plus, doing so shows attention to detail.

Congratulations, colleagues

Yanelis Perez, MBA 2008, is a consulting associate for RSM McGladrey in Coral Gables, Fla. The accounting, tax and business consulting firm focuses on serving the middle market. The firm operates in an alternative practice structure with McGladrey & Pullen LLP, a partner-owned CPA firm. Together the companies rank as the fifth largest U.S. provider of these services. Clients include The PGA of America.

Douglas Schwerdt, MBA 2008, started work last week as a manager with KPMG LLP's Economic and Valuation Services (EVS) practice, with a focus on transfer pricing. He is second in charge of the EVS practice for the Minneapolis area and says the work includes significant Fortune 500 headquarter-level client relationships throughout the Midwest, including Kansas City and Chicago. “I'm excited about working directly with the firm's partners to further build KPMG's client base in the Twin Cities, and having opportunities to work with the industry's top economists on transfer pricing tax court cases involving multinational firms,” Schwerdt said. The recent graduate says he has worked on several landmark cases, including analysis for the Internal Revenue Service that resulted in GlaxoSmithKline paying more than $3.4 billion. Schwerdt called the sum “the largest single payment ever to settle a tax dispute.”
