Florida State University and its College of Business face severe budget cuts

Today, the Florida State University released one of several proposed contingency plans to deal with the budget deficit that it will face over the next several academic years. This plan, which significantly impacts the College of Business, has not been approved, or adopted and is merely one of many suggested plans to deal with this crisis.

The goal of the University continues to be to create a three year budget to bridge the gap between the stimulus money that we will receive and the actual budget that we will use. The proposed plan that was announced today is just that, a proposal – not a final plan. Any plan that is finalized will ultimately depend on the final budget cuts approved by the Legislature, and a final approval of the Board of Trustees in June.

As no final decisions have been made, we still have a chance to effect change in the Legislature. Below are some ways that you can get involved:

  • Contact your legislator to express your concerns. A list of legislators with their email address and telephone numbers can be found at: http://www.uff-fsu.org/art/FloridaLegislators.xls
  • Attend the Town Hall Meeting hosted by T.K. Wetherell next Tuesday, April 21 at 3:30 p.m. in the theater of the Askew Student Life Building. Please note this facility only has a capacity to hold 300 people, so you will need to arrive early if you want to attend and ask questions. There will also be a live-stream that you can observe the meeting. The agenda for this meeting will be posted on the Budget Crisis Committee’s Web site on Friday, April 17 at: http://campus.fsu.edu/budget
