Bill Smith began his career at Capital City Bank in 1978. He worked in numerous capacities before being named President and Chief Executive Officer of Capital City Bank Group, Inc. in January 1989. He was elected Chairman in 2003. Smith also serves as the Chairman of the Capital City Bank Board of Directors.

In recent years, Capital City Bank has expanded outside of the Tallahassee area, serving a geographic circle inside Jacksonville, Atlanta, Birmingham, and Orlando. With acquisitions such as First National Bancorp, select Florida and Georgia offices of First Union, and First National Bank, Capital City has grown its client base in Taylor, Madison, Hernando, Pasco, Washington, Bradford, Clay, and Putnam Counties in Florida, as well as Burke, Troup, Chambers, Bibb, Grady, and Laurens Counties in Georgia and Alabama. Today, Capital City Bank Group, Inc. provides a full range of financial services at 70 banking offices, two mortgage lending offices, and 80 ATMs in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.

Active in the community, Smith serves on several boards for Florida State University, including the Florida State University Foundation, Florida State Athletic Board, The Florida State University Research Foundation. He also is a member of the board of directors of Capital City Bank Group, Capital City Bank, the Darlington School and Southern Company. Former professional associations include Board of Directors, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta; Board of Directors, Jacksonville Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta; Federal Advisory Council representative for the Sixth District of the Federal Reserve System; Board of Directors, Southeast Community Hospital Board; President of the Florida Bankers Association; Chair, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare; Chair, Tallahassee Area Chamber of Commerce; Chair, Tallahassee Area Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Council; National President, The Florida State University Alumni Association; Chair, City of Tallahassee Citizens Advisory Committee – Blueprint 200; City of Tallahassee, Citizens Review Committee – City Utilities; and Chair, The Florida State University Foundation.
