The Center for Insurance Research held a kick-off panel presentation and luncheon event at the University Center Club in Tallahassee, FL, on January 28th. Invited speakers included:
- Kevin McCarty, Insurance Commissioner, State of Florida
- Moira Campion McConaghy, Manager, Government Relations, National Association of Insurance Commissioners
- Dr. Andreas Richter, Director, Institute for Risk Management and Insurance, Ludwig-Maximillians-Universität, Munich
Attendees included over 100 insurance company executives, agents, regulators, and lawyers, as well as students and faculty from the department.
The most recent issue of Real Estate Economics (v. 37:4, 2009) reports that C.F. Sirmans, the Chastain Eminent Scholar Chair in Real Estate, was the journal's most prolific research author during its 1973 to 2008 publication period, as well as during the 1990-99 and 2000-08 periods. Real Estate Economics is widely regarded as one of the discipline's most prestigious academic research journals.
An article co-authored by Dean Gatzlaff, the Mark C. Bane Professor, (with J. Fisher, D. Geltner, and D. Haurin) was reported in Real Estate Economics (v. 37:4, 2009) to be the most widely cited article during the most recent three-year period reported.

Nicolas Merolle, an online MBA student (concentration in Real Estate) has been selected to receive a Kislak Scholarship in Real Estate for the Summer 2009 semester.
Patty Born was elected to the Board of Governors of the Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association for a three-year term. The Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association (APRIA) is an international society for academics, executives, researchers and government leaders with an interest in risk management, insurance, actuarial science and related areas.
C.F. Sirmans has been named an honorary RERI Fellow by the Real Estate Research Institute (RERI) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Institute and the real estate profession. RERI is a non-profit organization created to stimulate high quality research on real estate investment performance and market fundamentals that will elevate the quality of real estate decision making.
Professors C.F. Sirmans and G. Stacy Sirmans were recently ranked 1 and 20, respectively, in research productivity covering the 1990 to 2006 period (Journal of Real Estate Research, 2008). Globally, FSU was ranked 17th in research appearing in the three core real estate journals tracked and 23rd when considering a broader set of nine real estate journals. Note that because C.F. Sirmans joined the FSU faculty after the period evaluated, his record was not included in determining FSU's global ranking.
Two RMI students have been selected to receive 2009-2010 awards from the Spencer Educational Foundation. Stephen Fier (RMI-PhD) will receive the Graduate Scholarship ($10,000), and Brian Ford (an Undergraduate RMI major) will receive $5,000.
Jim Carson has been selected the Interim Editor for the Journal of Insurance Regulation. Jim will also be speaking about risk management/insurance to the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enter[roses, in Washington, D.C. in May.
REE major, Adam Foret, is the 2009 recipient of a CCIM Education Foundation University Scholarship offered through the CCIM Institute. The CCIM Institute is the world’s largest commercial real estate brokerage network. The scholarship includes a monetary award, as well as a voucher which entitles Adam to complete the CI-103 course, leading to the CCIM professional designation.
On February 23rd and February 24th, Julio Romero (State Farm), Jane Wahl (State Farm), David Medvidofsky (Main Street America Group), and David Halstead (Kemper) from the Jacksonville Chapter of the CPCU will be visiting to speak to risk management and insurance classes about career opportunities in the industry. Together, the speakers have more than 60 years of work experience in underwriting, claims, auditing, public relations, agency, and product development.
Dean Gatzlaff has been selected (via membership vote) to join the Board of Directors for the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association (AREUEA), the real estate area's leading academic organization.
