Three prominent insurance professionals will address RMI 3011 classes on October 13 and 14, 2008. Visiting campus will be Beth Stake, Catastrophe Staff Assistant in the Learning and Development department for State Farm; Ed Pierce, Risk Manager for Blue Cross Blue Shield; and Jane McDowell, Process Manager in the Florida Zone Process Renewal Group for State Farm.
Cyrus Sharp, Managing Director for Natixis Real Estate Capital in Atlanta and an alumnus of the FSU real estate program, will speak to real estate appraisal and real estate finance classes on October 22 and 23, 2008. Mr. Sharp will also address the FSU Real Estate Society at its October 22 meeting (7:00pm in Starry Conference Room; 220 RBB). He will be discussing recent developments in the capital markets.
Randy Smith, Founder and CEO of Smith Travel Research, Inc. will visit campus to meet with real estate students and faculty on October 24, 2008. Smith Travel Research, Inc. is the leading provider of hotel information for industry investors, managers and developers. Mr. Smith is a College of Business alumnus and 2007 hall of fame inductee.

Two alums of the FSU Real Estate Program spoke to students in REE 4143 (Real Estate Market Analysis) on September 29. Gina Fletcher, Supervisor of Land Valuation, and Doug Will, Chief Deputy-Appraisal Services, are both with the Office of the Leon County Property Appraiser in Tallahassee.
Congratulations to Dr. Randy Dumm who has been reappointed as Chair of the Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology by the Board of Trustees of the State Board of Administration. He will serve in that capacity until June 2009.

Kevin Gatzlaff (RMI-PhD) has been selected to receive a State Farm Companies Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Award. The award is designed to stimulate research and development of new knowledge in the fields of insurance and business. The recipient receives a $10,000 research grant and the recipient's institution a $3,000 grant.

Wiley-Blackwell, in its publisher’s report, lists “A Reexamination of the Corporate Demand for Reinsurance,” Journal of Risk and Insurance, March 2006, by Cassandra Cole and Kathleen McCullough, on its “top-ten” list of downloaded articles for 2007.
Dean Gatzlaff was named to the advisory board of the Real Estate Research Institute located in Hartford, CT.
