Michael F. Price, Franklin Mutual The inaugural "Town and Gown" series features Michael F. Price. Price is chairman of the board of Franklin Mutual Advisers and Franklin Mutual Series Fund, Inc. He has been associated with both entities and their predecessor organizations since 1975. At that time the adviser was known as Heine Securities Corporation, which managed Mutual Shares Fund. Price was a vice president of the fund from 1975 until 1986. In 1987, he became the president and CEO and served in these positions until November 1998.

Fortune magazine featured Price on its December 1996 cover calling him "the scariest S.O.B. on Wall Street." According to Smart Money, "Price --through his stakes in such companies as Sunbeam, Chase Manhattan, and Dial-- has effectively redefined role of fund manager, as he has forced management changes, brought about mergers and generally raised the kind of hell that used to be the province of the 1980's corporate raiders." Unlike corporate raiders, however, Price takes his pool of capital from small shareholders and is a value investor. By representing the interests of the shareholder, Price has redefined the role of the CEO in a company.

Price earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Oklahoma, which honored him with a Doctor of Humane Letters in 1998. In addition to his role as chairman of the board of Franklin Mutual Advisers and Franklin Mutual Series Fund, Price is trustee of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Boston College and Blair Academy. He is also chairman of the board of the MFP Foundation. He is a polo player who plays as aggressively as he invests.
